Dear Editor:
The recent article in the Moab Sun News (“Fight over county government change heats up”) failed to mention a key point about House Bill 224: The legislation was totally unnecessary.
Prior HB 224, citizens already had the right to propose a change in form of government. Our local Republicans have tried this twice in recent years, most recently in 2012. Both times Grand County voters said “No!” to the proposed change by a wide margin. Our current non-partisan form of government is clearly the one voters prefer but the option no longer exists.
HB 224 changed the rules to a “heads I win, tails you lose” situation and did not give Grand County any new options, it simply took away the option voters like best. The voters already made their decision and don’t need to be treated otherwise.
