The Grand County High School softball team fell into the one-loss bracket, losing 11-1 to Manti, then
won a pair of games, 11-1 over Delta and 14-4 over South Sevier, with their season on the line. After the action on Thursday, May 10, the remainder of the tournament was postponed because of rain and
rescheduled to be played Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex.
Against the Lady Templars in their first game of the day, Grand mustered only a single run in the first
inning, on the strength of a solo home run from senior Tyra Robertson. In total, the Lady Red Devils
had only five hits.
Manti put seven runs across over the first two innings, then added one more in the fourth and ended the game an inning early, thanks to the 10-run mercy rule, with three runs in the sixth inning.
After dropping into the one-loss bracket, Grand trounced the Lady Rabbits of Delta, 11-1 in five
innings, scoring three runs in the first inning and five in the second. The team never looked back, as they added two runs in the third inning and a run in the fifth inning. Junior Hannah Owen hit a pair of solo home runs while senior Corteney Noyes had three runs batted in.
With the win, Grand advanced to play South Sevier in their final game of the day, pouncing for five
first-inning runs. South Sevier scored four runs in the third inning to keep the game close, 7-4 at the
time, but Grand put the game away with five runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning,
making a third straight game end via the mercy rule at 14-4.
Sophomore Jaci Shumway hit a home run and had three runs batted in. Robertson also had three runs batted in, while Cox and sophomore Toni McElhaney each had two RBIs.
Shumway pitched the entire Manti game, and the entire South Sevier game, while Noyes pitched four
innings and Jessica Jones pitched an inning versus Delta. Unlike baseball, softball does not have a pitch-count or innings limit in the state tournament.
Grand was scheduled to play the loser of the game between Carbon and Union on Friday, May 11, as
the tournament continued, but the remainder of the tournament was rained out and is rescheduled for Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19. The Lady Red Devils need two wins Friday and a win on Saturday morning to advance to the state title game; then they need two more wins to bring home the title. The state title game is set for Saturday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m.
