The Grand County High School boys tennis team played in the state 3A tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 12, having competitors in three of the five divisions advance past the first round. In second singles, Kasey Kemp won his first-round match 7-5, 6-1, but lost in the quarterfinals 0-6 and 1-6. Kai Wainer won his first match in third singles 6-0, 6-0; before losing in the quarterfinals 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. In first doubles, Braxten Pierce and Tanner Mascaro won their first-round match 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 before losing in the quarterfinals 3-6, 4-6. Elton Kunze-Jones lost his first-round match in first singles 5-7, 2-6; and in second doubles, Cody Johnston and Hayden Lance lost their first-round match 4-6, 3-6. Rowland Hall won the state title with 23 points, one point ahead of Region 13 rival Waterford. The two schools faced off in the finals of all three singles divisions, and although they didn’t go head-to-head in either doubles division, Waterford won first doubles and Rowland Hall won second doubles. Manti was a distant third place with 9 points.
