The Grand County High School baseball team went 3-0 during Spring Break, defeating Summit Academy 7-3 on Monday, March 26, North Summit 25-3 on Tuesday, March 27, and Providence Hall 10-0 on Wednesday, March 28. The wins gave them the No. 4 spot in the Deseret News 3A team rankings, as of Sunday, April 1.
In the first game of the recess, Grand senior Masen Ward had a strong outing on the mound, pitching six innings and giving up only one earned run. The Red Devils scored in each of the first four innings, including a four-run outburst in the third inning. Seniors Alec Williams and Brayden Schultz each had a pair of runs batted in. Seniors Gage Hansen and Josh Jones and freshman Ryelan Denney also had runs batted in. Williams hit a double while lead-off hitting senior Bruin Meador hit a pair of doubles.
The following day, the Red Devils had an offensive explosion right from the start, scoring 12 runs in the first inning en route to a 25-3 five-inning shellacking. The Red Devils notched 21 hits, only two of which were for extra bases, while also walking nine times and taking advantage of three North Summit errors. Williams pitched the first three innings with no hits and no walks, striking out eight batters. Freshman Tyler Lindsay pitched the final two innings, giving up three runs on two hits and five walks.
Jones batted in three runs, while Hansen, Meador, Denney and junior Brody Williams each batted in two. Meador scored three runs of his own; he and Jones each had a double.
The Red Devils got another 10 hits on Wednesday as they shut out Providence Hall 10-0. Hansen had three hits in three tries, batting in two runs, while Alec Williams and Masen Ward also had two runs batted in. Grand got six stolen bases, three of which were from senior Bruin Meador. Senior pitcher Josh Jones pitched the entire five innings, giving up two hits; he struck out four batters, walked three and hit one with a pitch.
The Red Devils returned to Region 15 play at South Sevier on Tuesday, April 3, and were leading 3-1 after three innings as of press time on the strength of a home run from Meador to lead off the game. The Red Devils and Rams are scheduled to meet again in Moab on Friday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. Grand is also scheduled to play a non-region game in Monticello versus the Buckaroos on Tuesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
