George Francis Hawkins, 89, passed away on November 17, 2016, at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah.
George was born on May 5, 1927, in San Francisco, California, to Harold and Elizabeth McGovern Hawkins. He was the second born of nine children. They were raised in northern California and attended schools there.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Second World War.
He married Sharon Kay Holcomb in 1960. They were married in Long Beach, California, and had two sons together.
They moved to Moab in 1969, where he worked at Needles and the Island in the Sky for the National Park Service. He worked there until he retired in 1987. After he retired, his hobbies included taking care of his garden, fishing, hunting and hiking.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon; two sons, Michael and John Hawkins; a brother, Michael Crews; a sister, Bernadette Lotes; five grandchildren, Brittany Hawkins, Kayla Hawkins, Hailey Zeiler, Kimberly Mogensen and Kinley Dalton; his great-granddaughter, Gracelynn Kenney; and his two grand dogs, Abbie and Bella. He also loved and cared for his extended family, Danny and Brandy Dalton; Dennis and Trish Mogensen; and his good friend, Ward Tucker.
Upon his request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
