Back of Beyond Books owner Andy Nettell commissioned this painting of Jim Jones as a gift for Jones’ 94th birthday, and it was a special assignment for artist Margie Lopez Read.
Nettell calls Jones the kindest and most humble man he knows. At 94, Jones continues to demonstrate his kindness in many ways, volunteering for the Lions Club and bringing doughnuts to the bookstore staff each Friday, among other things.
He has a special chair in front of the shop that bears his name, and he sits there most mornings with a cup of coffee and a buddy to chat with sometimes.
Jones, who earned the nickname “Nature Boy,” worked for the National Park Service, with several superintendent positions under his belt. He also has a distinguished record as a World War II veteran who helped liberate France.
