Symony Call wins Sterling Scholar honor

Grand County High School had one winner and five runners-up at the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars competition held in Price on Thursday, March 10.

GCHS senior Symony Call was named the top overall winner in the Visual Arts category. Winning runners-up in their respective categories for Grand were Emilia Cubelos in English, Austin Aubry in Music, River Murdock in Computer Technology, Kylie Haycock in Family and Consumer Sciences, and Cody Jones in Science. All six of Grand’s Sterling Scholar nominees placed in the competition.

The competition featured southeastern Utah schools’ top seniors competing for scholarships and awards in 14 different categories. Each category had one winner and two runners-up, with respective awards of $800 and $400. Many Utah colleges and universities also offer full or partial scholarships to Sterling Scholar winners, and there are some that give lesser awards to runners-up.

GCHS associate principal Cari Caylor helped advise the Sterling Scholars this year, assisted by Donna Metzler and Dee Hannigan.
