The Grand County High School girls basketball team pulled away from the Green River Lady Pirates in Moab on Thursday, Dec. 10, breaking open a once-close game en route to a 61-41 victory.
In the early going, Grand and Green River both found themselves in foul trouble as each team was in the bonus by the middle of the second quarter, meaning every foul resulted in at least one free throw attempt. With the game tied at 16-16 midway through the frame, the Lady Red Devils went on a 12-0 run to close out the first half and begin the second half, then never looked back from there, extending their lead to 47-33 by the end of the third quarter. Grand sealed the victory in the fourth quarter by only allowing two field goals along with four made free throws by the Pirates, outscoring them 14-8 in the frame for a 61-41 win.
Senior Talaunee Croasmun was Grand’s leading scorer with 19 points, followed by senior Symony Call with 10. Sophomore Tyra Robertson pitched in with 8 points, senior Madi Jones and freshman Veda Gritts each had 7, junior Katie McKay had 6 points and freshman Annabelle Garrett rounded out the Lady Red Devils with 4 points.
Grand carried its momentum onto the the Dalby, Wendland and CO P.C. Wildcat Classic in Fruita, Colorado, the following night and played well as a team, but fell short to Grand Junction Central 60-48. The following day, the Lady Red Devils were on the wrong end of a 45-18 outcome against Grand Junction High School. Croasmun was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 19 points against Central and 10 versus Grand Junction.
The Lady Red Devils resume play at a tournament in Enterprise on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29 and 30, before bringing in the new year versus Monticello at home on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016 at 7 p.m.
