The University of Utah’s Rio Mesa Center is hosting an astronomy lecture and outdoor workshops beginning at 4 p.m., Saturday. An astronomy lecture will be given Saturday evening. Overnight camping is encoruaged. Sunday morning workshops include botany, entomology and archaeology. Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch are provided. Cleaning Up Moab After the Cold War ~ Grand County’s UMTRA (Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project) liaison, Lee Shenton describes the legacy of the “Cold War” in the Moab area. Taking us from Moab as a uranium boomtown in the 1950’s to the Department of Energy’s ongoing efforts to remediate the site of the old Atlas Uranium Mill and vicinity properties. Join archaeologist and historian, Sheri Murray-Ellis, as she discusses the fall out of President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066. This order provided for the forcible relocation of anyone of Japanese ancestry from specific areas of the country to inland internment camps. Included in this discussion will be the Moab Isolation Center. Sept 12: – Laura Martin ~ Living on the Margins: Expressions of the Northern San Juan Ancestral Pueblo People in Canyonlands National Park. ~ The Needles District of Canyonlands is known for its’ red rock spires, twisting canyons, and somewhat elusive water. It is also known for its’ spectacular rock art and plentiful masonry granaries. During the late 10th and 11th centuries, this region played host to a population of Northern San Juan Ancestral Pueblo farmers who found success in growing corn along the broad arable terraces and abandoned meanders of Salt Creek. Join Park archaeologist Laura Martin for a presentation of findings from recent archaeological studies conducted in Salt Creek that examine land use and the complex cultural expressions that include both Fremont and Mesa Verde traditions.6 p.m. At the Moab Information Center, on the corner of Main and Center streets.
