Cosmo’s Corner: Paws to Read!

PBS Utah’s annual reading challenge for kids is here! This year’s “Paws and Read” theme invites kids to read daily in November for prizes, including an Adventure Passport to local attractions. Kids who complete the challenge can also join the Grand County Public Library’s Cosmo the cat for his January birthday bash, complete with games and a service project honoring storytime dog LeeRoy.

Understanding Threats to Old Growth Ponderosa Pines

Ray Mesa, near the La Sal mountains on the Colorado-Utah border is notable for its old-growth ponderosa pines (estimated to be several hundred years old) that are growing in cool drainages amongst pinyon-juniper woodlands. Recent ponderosa tree mortality raised concerns among land managers and Larissa Yocom, a fire ecologist at Utah State University, began exploring the potential causes of these deaths. 

Native American Club continues as community staple, hires a new leader, hosts Indigenous Peoples Day event at YGP

The Grand County School District’s Native American Club, led by Ricky Begaye, celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day with 75–100 attendees at the Youth Garden Project, featuring traditional foods and a candlelight ceremony. The club aims to support Indigenous students through cultural education, with upcoming Family Nights and mentorship programs planned.

Q & A with Moab City Manager Michael Black

It’s been just a few weeks since Michael Black took on the role of city manager for Moab, transitioning from the position of community development director. In a conversation with the Moab Sun News, Black discussed his new job—he’ll stay connected to some of the projects he’s been working on, while passing some responsibilities off to other staff—as well as the city’s main priorities right now, including disaster resilience and housing stock.
