The Updraft (Falcon Climb) trail in the Falcon Flow system is now open, adding a long-planned uphill route to one of Moab’s busiest trail areas.

The new climb runs from the Falcon Flow trailhead to the Juniper Hiking trailhead, giving riders a designated way up and taking pressure off existing roads, keeping bikers on singletrack. The idea has been in the works for years as use in the area steadily increased.

Separating climbing and descending traffic is a common approach in modern trail design. Uphill riders move slowly and often have limited sightlines, while downhill riders are moving faster with less time to react.

Dedicated climb trails reduce close calls, allow downhill routes to ride more smoothly, and help limit trail damage caused by sudden braking and rerouting.

Trail managers with the Grand County Active Trails & Transportation Department say the surface is still settling.

“It’s soft and needs tires to help pack it in so anyone with plus size or fat bike tires go do some laps please!” trail builders urged in a post today.

The trail is now listed on Trailforks, where maps and condition updates are available.
