In just a few months, Sawyer Nunley not only learned the techniques of beekeeping, but was honored for his effort: the local young beekeeper’s first honey harvest took first place at the Utah State Fair!
Starting in April, Nunley quickly learned the art of beekeeping through a combination of local mentorship and self-study at Moab Homegrown, the local farm run by his family.

“Most people think of the desert as totally barren,” Sawyer explains, “but there are lots of plants that produce nectar and pollen for the bees, and they thrive!”
Nunley’s honey is unique and has a distinctive floral and herbal flavor profile that the State Fair judges called slightly “savory.” Harvested straight from the hive, the honey is notably thick and remarkably clear.
Nunley says credit for this success goes to local mentors and the beekeeping community.
“I think it’s cool that Moab Honey was one of the winners,” said Nunley, noting that there were quite a few honey contestants this year as well.
The appeal of the hive hasn’t worn off for Nunley who says that while he’s the only one who tends the bees, “my whole family loves having them.” Good luck next year, Sawyer!
