Cosmo’s Corner: What’s in and what’s out for Fall

Hello friends, and of course: meow. It’s me, Cosmo, your trusted Library Cat and trend forecaster, here to brief you on the hottest styles of Fall 2025, for Grand County Public Library and beyond. Remember, you heard it here first.

Out: Super-saturated colors. You won’t see me painting my claws hot pink this season! I’m betting
we’ll see designers working with color palettes that include cozier neutrals, earthy browns, and rich
jewel tones.

In: Black and white. This color pairing never goes out of style and can be worn anywhere-casual
library events, soirees, prowls, dirt baths. Think about it: have you ever seen me looking anything less
than impeccable? (You have not.)

Out: Merely talking about writing a book. I get it-the process is intimidating. It’s hard to know where
to start. But writing is as much about discipline and practices as it is about talent and ideas. Look at
me-1 write a newspaper column every single week, and I’m a cat.

In: Actually writing a book! Come to a generative memoir workshop with Suzanne Roberts on Friday
October 10, 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Grand County Public Library. Participants will work through a series
of writing prompts, explore ways to get unstuck, use specifics and sensory imagery, and work on scene building.

Out: Giving books to babies and hoping for the best. This does not help them learn to read, sorry.
In: Library storytime! These are a great way to introduce younger kids to the library and the joy of
reading. Join us for bilingual story hour with the MVMC, on Friday, October 24 at 2:30 PM. We’ll have
music and stories in Spanish and English, and crafts suitable for ages 3 and up.

Out: Hustle culture and the grindset mindset. “Influencers” will tell you that you need to stay
laser-focused to achieve your professional and financial goals, that working too much is the only way to get ahead. Cats will tell you the real truth: the only thing that needs your laser-focus is laser pointers.

In: Therapeutic laziness. Rest is self-care. When was the last time you lay motionless in the thrall of
a golden sunbeam? Try it.

Out: The Gregorian calendar. And linear time. They’ve had a good run but the Moab library’s pro-
jected renovation schedule has gotten the better of them both. We are told that our new HVAC units are in transit. Then we hear they haven’t shipped at all. Then they say next week. Then they say next week again! Time is a flat circle!

In: Schrödinger’s Cat. More than just a scary bedtime story for kittens, the lessons of this story
directly apply to our little predicament here. Until actually observed, the library’s new HVAC system
exists in multiple states at once (the units are at the factory, in transit, already at the library). So, will
the library be closed for renovation this month? You’ll know when we know!
