Greetings, fellow earthlings. It’s me again, Cosmo, your favorite Library Cat.
Life is pretty peaceful here at Grand County Public Library — just the way I like it: napping at the circulation desk, patrolling the library courtyard, and striking a pose for selfies with visitors. But while I take it easy, I’m always amazed at how much the librarians accomplish. They don’t just run the whole library (a big job!), they’re constantly out and about—visiting schools, attending community events, even hosting radio shows about books! This, my friends, is what modern “outreach” looks like.
The children’s room is always a whirlwind of activity as the staff preps stories, crafts, and activities: testing out creative project ideas, selecting books and puppets, folding gauzy scarves, and tuning ukuleles. It’s quite the show.
Everyone’s favorite, though, is the Library’s Book Bike — a bright red cargo bike loaded with books and topped with a colorful striped umbrella. It’s been making rounds at places like the Youth Garden’s Harvest Fest and the Red Rock Arts Festival, and it’s gearing up to roll into the Moab Valley Multicultural Center’s Día de Muertos celebration on Sunday, November 2nd.
Twice a month, the Moab Charter School enjoys a Book Bike visit, where students can check out books during their lunch break — right from the playground!
Every Tuesday, Ms. Mary and Ms. Rae visit Moab Head Start, captivating preschoolers with stories, crafts, and songs. Yes, ukuleles included — and yes, very fun.
Meanwhile, Ms. Krissy and Ms. Charlotte connect with 5th-graders at HMK Elementary School for First Chapter Fridays, reading the opening chapter of a book to whet their literary appetites. Just last week, I spotted one enthusiastic student head straight to the library to borrow the book they heard earlier that day. Mission accomplished!
Ms. Charlotte doesn’t stop there — she also visits Ms. Hannigan’s High School English class to help students use newspapers and magazines from the library’s Periodicals section for their assignments.
Once a month, the library teams up with the Multicultural Center for a Bilingual Storytime. I’ve been known to sneak in for some fun — I can even count birds in Spanish now.
The librarians are also gearing up for the 10th Annual Trunk or Treat on Halloween night, where they’ll be handing out free books and candy to Moab families. I’ll be skipping this one — sticky fingers and sugar-fueled chaos? I think not.
But I am excited for a musical treat later this month! Music at the Blissful with Evan Haller returns to Grand County Public Library on October 22 at 10:30 a.m. His singing and guitar playing enchanted everyone last time — yes, even me.
October is brimming with activity, and we hope to see you soon! Stop by the library — and if you see the librarians out in the wild, tell them Cosmo sent you.
