We’re obsessed with Fat Bears!
ROAR and hello friends! Cosmo the library bear… er, cat here, reporting on MORE Fat Bear Adventures, because who can get enough of this? As we’ve already mentioned, September is “Fat Bear Month” at Grand County Public Library. With only 3 weeks until a winner is crowned on September 30!
Alaska’s bears are looking gloriously rubinesque, and who doesn’t need a joyful distraction these days? Last year’s winner, Grazer, weighed over 800 pounds! She was truly a mammoth mama! But some of these bears weigh over 1200 lbs! They’re a sight to behold.
While they can never outdo a cat for grace and beauty, I must admit that bears have a certain allure and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t inspired by their lifestyle. They somehow manage to pull off being both charmingly cute and impressively intimidating at the same time.
Like cats, bears are strong, and adaptable, and they have an exceptional sense of smell. Not only are they fast runners, skilled climbers and accomplished fishers, they are capable of great feats of endurance, for not even I can nap for most of a winter (though one can aspire).
Because I have realized our commonalities I’ve decided to throw my hat into the ring and have dedicated myself to a strict training regimen; I sleep for at least 14 hours a day, the other ten I spend eating or staring at my bowl waiting for fresh salmon to appear . . . with disappointing results. What I need is for someone to pay my airfare to Alaska! Did you know that one sockeye salmon can weigh up to 15 pounds? I’d only need to catch one or two to catapult myself to glory. I have been practicing my whole life for this! If only it were a Corpulent-Cat-Contest, I could have been a contender.
Anyway.
This brings me to the point of today’s article. We’re obsessed with bears. Luckily we know just the person to educate us about these magnificent chonksters. Miss Linda the Zoo Lady will be presenting “The Bear Facts” on Tuesday, September 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Grand County Public Library.
Miss Linda is a retired zoo educator and always willing to share her knowledge. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about ursine-kind, I highly recommend this event. “The Bear Facts,” is geared towards kids and their families, but everyone is welcome. I am paws-itivley giddy with excitement!
