Sammy Andrew Somerville, 91, passed peacefully at home with family at his side.
Sammy was born in Moab Utah on April 19th 1934 to Lola Hector and Stut Somerville. He attended school in Moab and was on the basketball team. He had very fond memories of those days.
After graduation, Sammy worked various jobs including in oil exploration. He entered the service in 1958. While stationed in Germany, his mother wrote and informed him that she had met his future wife. Lo and behold, she had. After returning home, he met and married Darlene Lanier on September 23, 1960.
After retiring from Rio Algom mining company, Sammy farmed and picked up several hobbies including woodworking and polishing rocks, which lead to doing jewelry with Darlene. They did local craft fairs around the area.
Sammy is survived by a son, Stewart J. ( Susan) Somerville; two daughters, Debra (Phillip) Lee and Andrea Edwards; grandchildren, Sami Edwards and Ryan Edwards; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Sammy is preceded in death by his wife Darlene, son Andrew, mother Lola, father Stut, grandson Jeffery Andrew, and sister Betty Scarlett.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 28 at 11 a.m. at Spanish Valley Mortuary. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service. Burial with military rites will follow the services at Grand Valley Cemetery.
