City finances are looking strong. Moab ended the fiscal year with about $1.5 million in unplanned savings as revenues came in higher than expected and several departments spent under budget. The Moab City Council also approved a switch to energy-efficient LED streetlights and passed new rules requiring electric vehicle readiness in multi-family housing developments.

Food insecurity may be rising in Grand County. Local pantries are reporting higher demand, with the Multicultural Center expecting to serve more than 10% of Moab’s population this year. St. Francis Episcopal Church’s weekly food bank now serves up to 350 people a week, while supply shortages at the state level make it harder to keep up. Residents are urged to donate shelf-stable foods and volunteer time.

Moab teen Elizabeth Knight has been selected for Team USA and will compete at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Andorra this fall. Knight, a 2024 Grand County High graduate and now a student at Colorado Mesa University, says her training is focused on sharpening speed and recovery. She credits Moab’s terrain, her high school NICA team, and a strong local support system for her success.

On the arts front, Leaving a Trace, an immersive community-built theater production, will debut September 25–28 at Sand Flats Recreation Area. The show explores Moab’s land and stories through characters like rivers, cows, and “rock witches,” with more than 50 local residents in the cast. Tickets are limited to 100 per performance.

Sports roundup: Grand County High School girls tennis placed third at the Carbon Invitational, while volleyball, soccer, cross-country, and football teams continued a busy schedule.

Community notes include the obituary of longtime Moab residents Sammy Somerville and William “Bill” Allen Johnston, photos from Moonflower Co-op’s anniversary celebration, and a call for food donations ahead of the September 20 Moab Community Food Drive.
