Construction continues on La Sal Mountain Loop Road – new updates on July road closures

[Denise Perritt Klassen]

Drivers heading into the La Sals this summer should plan ahead: major construction is continuing on the La Sal Mountain Loop Road, and closures are in effect on multiple sections.

Paving work resumes July 21
Starting Monday, July 21, the road will be fully closed just above Hardgrave Road from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays while crews complete paving work. Drivers can still access the area before 8:30 a.m. or after work wraps up each evening. The Castle Valley route remains open for access during construction.

Lower section closed for sealant work
A lower portion of the loop—between Old Airport Road and the Pack Creek Cutoff—has been closed from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily since July 7 while crews apply a prime sealant. Above that, from Pack Creek to Hardgrave, traffic is limited to one-way under flagger control. Ken’s Lake is still accessible via U.S. Highway 191.

More closures coming
Paving has now begun between Old Airport Road and Pack Creek. That section is also closed daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The section between Pack Creek and Hardgrave remains open with alternating one-way traffic.

To the south, crews are installing new culverts near Hoolihan Road. That segment is also closed weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but evening and weekend travel is allowed. Geyser Pass remains accessible via Castle Valley.

Long-term project
The project, led by the Federal Highway Administration, began in spring 2024 and is expected to continue through fall 2025. In total, 12.2 miles of road will be widened, repaved, and upgraded for safety and drainage.
