Hello friends and fellow music lovers, it’s Cosmo the Library Cat! I’m here to let you all know that I’ll be postponing my midmorning nap on Saturday, April 12. I have gotten a much better invitation and I want to tell you about it too.
Grand County Public Library will be hosting a drumming group—Moab Taiko Dan—to perform at a special Musical Story Hour on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m.
You might wonder at a library inviting a group of drummers. But modern libraries are not the silent, stolid places they’re made out to be on TV. Libraries are full of life! Have you ever seen me shush anyone? I guarantee you have not.
So who or what is Moab Taiko Dan?
Taiko means drum in Japanese. Taiko has been part of Japanese culture for centuries and more recently it has gained popularity in North America. Taiko involves a whole group of percussionists, drumming in sync to create powerful, dynamic music.
Moab Taiko Dan started here more than 30 years ago with a revolving group of participants. They have performed all over and even taught BEACON Afterschool clubs. This is not even their first appearance at the library—they did a musical story hour in 2019 before I was officially a Library Cat. I am excited to get to experience their music firsthand. I have the soul of a drummer, even if I lack the opposable thumbs to grip the sticks.
These free Musical Story Hours are presented in partnership with the Moab Music Festival, with additional funding from the City of Moab and The Synergy Company. Musical Story Hour is geared towards preschool and early elementary-aged children and their caregivers, but as always, all ages are welcome.
