In memory of Gordon Butcher

August 20, 1946 – December 8, 2024

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Gordon Doyle Butcher, age 78, passed away at his home with his wife and family by his side in the early morning hours of December 8, 2024.

He was born August 20, 1946, in Salt Lake City to Merrill Butcher and Bessie (Higgins) Butcher.

Gordon served during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medals. He owned and operated Gordon’s Service Station in Moab, where he met Verna. He retired from his career as a diesel mechanic for the Grand County School District in 2009.

He loved classic country music, outdoor sports, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and camping with his family. He also loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and his friends at the VFW. He enriched our lives with so many happy memories, much love, and endless laughter.

Gordon is survived by his wife Verna: his best friend, his soulmate, his forever-after. Also survived by his children, David (Almond) Butcher, Robert Anderson, Steven Butcher, Scott Butcher, Tonia Peterson, Jared (Dawn) Shumway, Jared Butcher, Josh Shumway, and Nicole Shumway; sister Bonnie (Hans) Wingelaar; brother-in-law James (Sandra) Foy; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughters Alicia Marie Butcher and Jennifer Knight, his grandson Steven Tyler Nickle, and his son-in-law Gordon Sevell Peterson.

He will be greatly missed by many.

At Gordon’s request, cremation has taken place and his wife and family have decided to hold a celebration of his life at a date decided later.
