The UMTRA site (Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action project) managed by the Department of Energy is a familiar sight along the highway driving into or leaving town to the north. The project’s objective is to clean up the mine tailings left by the Atlas Mill, one of the very few privately-funded uranium processing sites in America, which operated from 1956 (1962 owned by Atlas) to 1984. The mill processed none other than Charlie Steen’s uranium ore pitchblende (and much, much more ore).
