After a two-month break from the summer heat, Moab Art Walk is back.
This month’s event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. All venues are within one square block of downtown, and include the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, Moonflower Community Cooperative, Bret Edge Gallery, Gallery Moab, Tom Till Gallery, Triassic Moab, Framed Image and the Museum of Moab.
In a new twist this month, Art Walk punch cards will be handed out at all of Art Walk’s eight venues. Participants can visit each venue to receive a “punch” from each location, and then enter to win a free gift.
Moab Arts and Recreation Center Assistant Director Liz Holland said she wants to encourage Art Walk patrons to visit each and every venue over the weekend.
“There is so much wonderful work shown during Art Walk,” Holland said. “I really had no idea what Art Walk was all about until I attended earlier this year. It’s fun!”
Punch cards have to be returned to the MARC at 111 E. 100 North by the following Monday after each Art Walk in order to be eligible.
“We hope to have cool prizes to give away each month, but you’ll have to come join us,” she said.
This month’s winner will receive a free 30-minute service of their choice at Spa Moab.
“We wanted to support Art Walk, which in turn supports the downtown business corridor,” Spa Moab owner Faye Hutchins said.
Highlights this month include ViviAnn Rose’s work at the MARC. Rose is displaying her black-and-white photographic prints, along with original hand-oiled images, and more. Her subjects from nudes to landscapes, vintage vehicles and abandoned structures that nature has reshaped into new character. She has received many awards, participated in international shows, and shown in museums.
“I am very happy to have this opportunity to show in Moab, my home so full of memories,” Rose said. “I’ve captured the majority of my images on film in this area and still find more to see.”
The Museum of Moab at 118 E. Center St. is featuring the show “Paintings that Explore the Colorado Plateau,” by Grand Junction, Colorado, landscape artist and part-time Moab resident George Callison.
Tom Till of Tom Till Gallery spends up to 250 days a year chasing dawn, sunsets and storm light that graces the canyon country. His images blend magnificent locations, singular lighting and painstaking print craftsmanship into his photographs and capture once-in-a-lifetime moments. Tom Till Gallery is located at 61 N. Main St.
Framed Image Fine Art at 59 E. Center St. will be featuring the works of Chloe Hedden.
In her macro flower and crystal paintings, Hedden “looks for the unseen patterns and hidden narratives that reveal the magnificence in all things.” She makes use of archetypes from the cultural and mystical history that connect all humans and all life forms.
Moonflower Community Cooperative’s featured artist is Daniel Johnson, whose abstract and representational work is meant to invoke the same transcendent feeling one may get while exploring the Moab area. His work has been featured in over 25 shows during the past eight years, including his first public solo show at the Albany Civic Theatre in Albany, Oregon, and Prism Magazine, an art journal at Oregon State University. Moonflower is located at 39 E. 100 North.
Gallery Moab joins Art Walk with a new guest artist, Barbara Churchley, and featured artists Robin Straub and Phil Wagoner. They are well known in the Moab art scene for their bold and colorful oil paintings. Altogether, the gallery will have works by 20 local artists, including new acrylic artist Shari Michaud.
Bret Edge’s images at the Edge Gallery hope to inspire others to wander into the wilderness, to go for a road trip to a national park or just sit at the edge of a desert canyon watching a sunset. Check out his work at 137 N. Main St.
Last but not least, the creative team of sisters Rosie Boone and Kathy O’Connor will collaborate for Triassic’s September Art Walk at 7 N. Main St. Boone is showcasing her hand felted scarves and hand-bound books made from locally spun and dyed materials and up-cycled remnants. O’Connor is sharing her hand-spun yard and woven goods as well. Come join Triassic for refreshments and one-on-one time with the artists.
