Steve Schultz, rear, cheers Otis Calef on as they ride across the Colorado River pedestrian bridge on Friday, Aug. 29, with fellow equestrians Jim Clark and Dick Waller. Backcountry Horsemen riders Calef, Waller and Clark passed through Moab as they traveled along the Old Spanish Trail toward Santa Fe, New Mexico. The historic trade route, which was established in 1829, runs from New Mexico’s capital city to Los Angeles. The Backcountry Horsemen split their trip up into two segments, starting the second leg of their journey in Parowan on Aug. 10. They expect to arrive in Santa Fe on Sept. 16.
