Remains found in area couple went missing after flash flood outside Moab, authorities say

In a July 22 press release, the Grand County Sherrif’s Office reported that human remains have been found in Millcreek Canyon. Last month, a visiting couple disappeared in the same area after flash flooding.

A multi-agency search for Ray and Maranda Ankofski was launched after the couple did not return from a UTV ride down Steelbender Trail on June 21. That day, a violent rainstorm hit the Moab area, with over an inch of rain falling in 15 minutes in some areas.

Despite a lengthy search, the effort transitioned into a recovery effort on June 28 after searchers discovered evidence that the pair had been caught in a flash flood.

Authorities have not yet identified the remains, which were sent to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
