Moab Arts welcomes new reuse Artists in Residence

Cole Forrest and Anneloes van Beek are the featured artists for August 2024

This week, Moab Arts announced the selection of Cole Forrest and Anneloes van Beek as the featured artists for the Moab Arts Reuse Residency, a unique program fostering environmental awareness and artistic innovation designed to spark conversations around sustainability.

The residency program began in 2021, and since then has invited diverse artists to collaborate with the Canyonlands Solid Waste Authority and WabiSabi to create works that engage with the local waste and recycling streams.

Cole Forrest is an Anishinaabe filmmaker, writer, and curator from Nipissing First Nation and will explore film development methods. Developing film traditionally requires harsh chemicals, but Forrest will work with alternative, eco-friendly methods.

Film aficionados will be happy to hear that Forrest will lead a series of free workshops in August about alternative film processes that use everyday materials like coffee grounds and baking soda.

Anneloes van Beek is focusing on woodworking for her residency, inspired by Moab’s designation as a Tree City. Van Beek plans to explore local sources of wood, creating reliquary boxes that track the individual origin and history behind the material to “encourage more thoughtful consumption and disposal of wood-crafted items,” a press statement from Moab Arts detailed.

Van Beek will host events that explore the art of woodworking with reclaimed materials, and the work of both artists will be presented as a finale to the residency on August 29.

For those interested in participating, the Moab Arts website provides detailed information about the workshops and how to get involved. Registration is required for certain events, and materials will be provided. Events will be scheduled throughout the month and publicized at moabarts.org and on Moab Arts social media channels.
