Building community through art

Friends of Arches and Canyonlands hold printmaking workshops

Both established and budding artists gathered on the Moab Museum’s lawn on July 2, carving linoleum blocks and creating new art as part of the Friends of Arches and Canyonlands outreach program. Two more sessions with local artist Riley Lubich are planned for July 16 and 30 at 6:30 p.m.

The landscape of the Southwest has been depicted via printmaking many times, as in the stark block prints of adventurer and artist Everett Ruess, featured in a Moab Museum exhibit last year. Proceeds from the event go to the Friends work supporting regional national parks.

The nonprofit Friends of Arches and Canyonlands has been reaching out recently, creating regular events like Trails and Tales and Pints for Parks to re-introduce the organization and invite National Park Service leaders to attend events and chat with local residents.

“At the carving event, people hang out, talk, and enjoy the museum lawn while learning how to carve. It’s super exciting,” Alex Gabrielle, outreach and communications coordinator for Friends of Arches and Canyonlands, said. To make the events more accessible, a 10% discount on the ticket price of $65 is available for locals who sign up, encouraging broader community participation.

The event is appropriate for all ages and skill levels, all materials are provided, and Lubich will be there as the workshop leader to assist. Local business Adobe Gardens is supplying food and snacks for the events.

Other upcoming events for the Friends of Arches and Canyonlands this year include celebrations for Canyonlands National Park’s  60th birthday in September. For more details, follow their updates on social media.
