Grand falters in season opener

The Grand County Lady Red Devils girls basketball team struggled to get going offensively against the Fruita, Colorado, Wildcats, who allowed Grand only one first-half point on their way to a 52-11 win during a home game in Moab on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The Wildcats, who have eight players on their roster at least 5 feet, 10 inches tall and another three at least 5 feet 8 inches tall, had their way both offensively and defensively against the Lady Red Devils. Fruita jumped out to a 14-1 lead after one quarter, then shut out the Lady Red Devils 14-0 in the second quarter. The Wildcats stifled the Grand offense with defensive hustle, beating Grand down the court and forcing turnovers.

Grand appeared tired against the Wildcats and the young squad, which played four freshmen in the varsity contest, couldn’t match Fruita’s physicality. The Lady Red Devils were able to pick up some defensive momentum that translated to points on the other end late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. Senior Talaunee Croasmun and junior Sarah Day each scored four points in the contest and the other three were scored by senior Madison Jones.

The Lady Red Devils hoped to rebound in the second game of the tenure of new coach Raye Lyne Robertson, which was set for Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Green River. Results from that contest weren’t available this week. Grand is next scheduled to play at Monticello on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., then the Lady Red Devils return home for another game versus Green River on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.
