The Grand County girls track and field team placed second and the boys team placed third at the Matt Burr Invitational in Salina on Saturday, March 28. The girls scored 90.5 points, while meet winner North Summit scored 106 points. The boys scored 53 points, while second-place North Summit scored 103 points and first-place San Juan scored 122 points.
The girls were led junior Kwincey Wells, who won the 100-meter hurdles event with a time of 17.10, one-hundredth of a second ahead of second-place Carbon runner Sarah Ohlwiler. Wells also placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (53.29), fourth in the 200-meter dash (29.04) and fourth in the long jump (14 feet, 10.25 inches).
Sophomore Jayelen Knowles also had a strong meet, placing fifth in the 3200-meters (13:45.54) and sixth in the 800-meters (2:52.02) and the 1600-meters (6:21.77). Junior Lauren Drake finished just ahead of Knowles at fifth in the 800 (2:47.89). The girls also got contributions in the distance races from sophomore Alexa Pierce, who placed fifth in the 400-meters at 1:05.39; and from sophomore Ellie Kelly, who placed sixth in the 400-meters at 1:06.07. Kelly also finished fifth in the long jump at 14 feet, 9.75 inches.
In the other field events, junior Britnee Lewis placed second in the shot put at 31 feet, 6.5 inches, and fourth in the discus at 90 feet, 11 inches; and senior Kasey Betts placed second in the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch.
For the boys, senior Jasen Christensen brought home the lone gold medal with his first-place throw of 121 feet in the discus. Other notable finishes include senior Richie Cordero’s second-place finish in the javelin at 146 feet, 8.5 inches, senior Andrew Hugentobler’s third-place finish in the 1600-meters (5:05.64), senior Mason Tranter’s third-place finish in the 800-meters (2:15.11) and fourth-place finish in the 400 (54.94), freshman Ryan Lewis’ sixth-place finish in the 800-meters (2:21.61) and seventh-place finish in the 3200-meters (11:12.43), and freshman Gage Souza’s seventh-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (19.53) and eighth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (52.08).
The Red Devils are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 10 at the Templeview Invitational in Manti.
