Everyone needs a space that’s not home, or, the place where you work – a third and separate space where you’re completely free to focus on a craft, or create whatever feeds your soul. That’s the premise behind Third Space, a collaborative Moab studio, at 225 S. 400 East.
Third Space co-founders Serah Mead and Nara Bopp offer affordable do-it-yourself art projects and are hosting “Unwind and Bind” – a free workshop to learn how to make a zine, which is a mini-magazine, or simplified book. It’s a method of quickly assembling a small book, of which you can then make copies and distribute to your friends, Mead said. People make books about a wide variety of topics.
People interested in attending the Unwind and Bind zine-making workshop may want to come with their own idea for a zine, although it’s not necessary. Mead said they will talk briefly about why zines are important, and will provide all the supplies necessary to create one. The workshop will last approximately two-and-a-half hours.
“We hope to create an Unwind and Bind series,” Mead said, that will include later classes on paper-making and screen printing.
Since its opening in January, Third Space has hosted a giant puppet-making workshop, a costume-making event in preparation for the Canyonlands Community Recycling’s Trashion Fashion Show and an artist talk held at Eddie McStiff’s. Moab artist Tim McCalister spoke recently at the restaurant’s Garden Room, where his found-art sculptures are currently exhibited.
“His work is so unique,” Mead said. “It’s found-art sculpture. He embodies the ethos of Third Space – creating art without spending a lot of money.”
“Fabulous” is how Moab resident Susan Baffico described Third Space’s giant puppet-making workshop.
“We had a blast,” Baffico said. “There were so many supplies; they knew what they were doing.”
Last week, Third Space collaborated with WabiSabi to host a flyer-making workshop at the Grand County Public Library. It was about the “dos and don’ts of flyer creation,” Mead said. The goal was to show how to make a beautiful, eye-catching flyer on a budget, she added.
Bopp is currently working for WabiSabi as part of an AmeriCorps position; Mead is a former associate director of Community Rebuilds’ housing program – nonprofit experiences that influenced the women’s decision to open Third Space, Mead said.
Third Space is able to offer classes for free by working under the umbrella of the Moab Arts Council, a nonprofit that allows Third Space to apply for grants to purchase supplies. Bopp – a bookbinder – and Mead – a graphic designer – donate their time teaching classes at Third Space.
Both Bopp and Mead studied art, and each were accustomed to more art opportunities in the big cities where they resided before moving to Moab – one of the reasons why they founded Third Space, Mead said. The whole point of Third Space is to make do-it-yourself craft projects free, or low-cost so that “anybody can do it,” she said.
