Obituary: Glenn Earl Byers

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Glenn Earl Byers passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Sept. 28, 2022.

Glenn was born to George and Marie Byers on Oct. 1, 1936, in Taylorville, Illinois. Glenn moved with his family to Dragerton, Utah, (now known as East Carbon City) when he was around 5 years old. He later made his home in Moab in 1965. Glenn worked at Texas Gulf Sulphur as an electrician until his retirement.

The love of Glenn’s life was his wife, LaRay. They were married on Jan. 26, 1959, in Elko, Nevada. That marriage was later solemnized at the Manti, Utah, Temple.

Glenn’s passions for fun were four-wheeling in the canyon lands, playing softball, walking his dogs, jogging, golfing, pickleball, and spending time with family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Glenn was an avid animal lover and his fur babies were his family. He loved them all, even down to his pet hummingbirds.

Glenn and his twin sister, Glenda, were the youngest of seven siblings and the third set of boy/girl fraternal twins born to his parents.

Glenn is survived by his children, Steven Byers (Yudelka), Glenda Byers, and Terri Byers (Kenyon Sheets); his grandchildren, Michael Byers, Meritt Elsberry, (Timothy Elsberry), DJ Byers, and Loni Sheets; great-grandchildren Burgan and Annabella Byers, Moseley and Maisa Elsberry. His family and extended family, including nieces and nephews, will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his father, George Ellsworth Byers of Florida; Marie Wilson Byers of Utah; Vera Cary (Refel) of California; Thomas Byers (Maurine) of California; Shirley Wharff (Ray) of Utah; Allan Byers of Illinois; Ellen Livingston (Robert) of Colorado; and Glenda Richardson (George) of Nevada, and an infant son, Joseph Byers.

The family would like to thank everyone for their words of encouragement and thoughts, especially Mountain Land Physical Therapy, Grand County EMS, Moab Regional Hospital, Spanish Valley Mortuary and Grand Valley Cardiology at the Community Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, for their professionalism and the kindness shown to our family and our dad and grandfather at this time.

Funeral services for Glenn Byers will be held Saturday, October 8 at 12 noon at the Moab Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel (400 North). A viewing will be held on Friday, October 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Spanish Valley Mortuary and one hour before the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
