Morgi Croasman is trying to bring back the volleyball tournaments she remembered as a child.
It’s been about five years since 30 to 40 teams from out of town would come to Moab to play, she said.
“When I came of age, they stopped,” Croasman said.
She’s organizing three coed volleyball tournaments during March held at the Center Street Gym through Moab City Recreation.
She hopes to have about 15 teams at Midnight Madness, the first of the three coed volleyball tournaments.
Midnight Madness will be held Friday, March 1. Captains’ meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
“We will keep playing until the tournament is done. We will go all night until there is a winner. There is no break,” Croasman said. “We’ll have two courts going at a time.”
The Midnight Madness tournament will be for coed teams of six players. Two of the players must be male, but there can be no more than three male players per team.
The next tournament will be Women and Men’s 3s to be held Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9. Captains’ meetings begin at 6:30 on Friday. Game play begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
For the three-person teams, there has to be at least one male player, but no more than two.
The final tournament for the month is Coed 4s to be held Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23. Captains’ meetings begin at 6:30 on Friday, and game play begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
For the four-person teams, there has to be at least one male player, but no more than two.
Croasman encourages teams to register now through the Moab City Recreation program.
“Our adult winter volleyball tournaments had been a fixture for years, bringing in teams from all over the region and the West,” said Moab Recreation director John Geiger. “It’s exciting to see them return. We have a variety of tournament formats stretching over several weekends. There are plenty of opportunities for players and spectators.”
For someone who wants to be part of the tournament, but doesn’t want to play, Croasman is searching for referees.
Moab City Recreation hosts an open-gym for coed volleyball at the Center Street Gym each Wednesday.
“About 20 people show up and we split into teams of four or five, depending on how many people show up,” Croasman said. “We usually play from 7:30 to about 10 at night.”
