Seniors from Moab and the western United States will compete in the Moab Senior Games this weekend. Those age 50 and up will compete in tennis, golf, pickleball, track and field and 3K run walk.
“Spectators are welcome,” said Moab Senior Games founder Suzan Martin.
Seniors will travel to games across the country for competition and awards. Award ceremonies will be held at Zax on Friday and at Buck’s Grill House on Saturday.
“The medals are what it is all about. People will have them displayed as a collection,” Martin said. “They have their medals from senior games they’ve attended and won.”
The largest sport this year is track and field. There are several categories within track and field for seniors to choose. There are different meter dashes and runs. They will also compete in shot put, discus, high jump and standing jump, as well as soccer, football and baseball throws.
Community Nursing Services will provide a health booth at Aarchway Inn from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day during the senior games where seniors can get their blood pressure and blood sugar checked, as well as get a flu shot.
Martin is already looking forward to Moab Summer Games to be held in either June or July.
“It will be more of a Grand Center kind of thing,” Martin said. It will also provide opportunities for younger seniors in their 50s to compete and work with their parents.
“This is a way to get to know your parents, to learn about their competitive side,” Martin said. “It’d be fun and a chance to re-associate with mom and dad.”
The summer sports may include billiards, table tennis and cribbage.
