The Moab Valley Multicultural Center moves into 2019 after providing over 3,374 hours of direct service in 2018, the most in its history.
The Moab Valley Multicultural Center said in a recent press release that over 5,000 people were helped with language services and 1,700 with crisis interventions in 2018.
New partnerships have been formed and technology donated in order to keep pace with continued growth. Further educational opportunities are forthcoming, and the center will continue to offer relevant and needs-based multicultural programs and services throughout 2019.
The Moab Valley Multicultural Center welcomes Emily McKenzie as its contracted immigration attorney. Based out of Salt Lake City, McKenzie is already accepting referrals and aiding the Moab Valley Multicultural Center’s clients with immigration cases. New partnerships were also formed with Moab Community Gardens and the Youth Garden Project.
Moab Community Gardens will use the Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC) yard space to create an “International Nibble Garden” and the MVMC will partner with the Youth Garden Project for its annual spring break day camp.
Spanish classes will be offered at the MVMC beginning on Feb. 25. The MVMC has engaged Bit Betancourt, a native of Venezuela, as its new teacher.
Three classes will be offered per week — beginner, intermediate and advanced.
The classes will be offered at a low cost ($5) and available to all. MVMC education coordinator Quincy Masur said, “Speaking a second language is a wonderful skill that opens doors to new experiences, friendships, and opportunities and I am thrilled we will be able to help facilitate Spanish language acquisition.”
The MVMC said the Moab Rotary Club generously sponsored mobile work stations for MVMC staff, which will make on-the-go data input quicker and easier. The MVMC said it is grateful to the Rotary Club for ongoing support of the center, and it looks forward to using the new technology in order to improve the efficiency and quality of its services.
