Don’t miss your chance this weekend to see new works of art during this month’s ArtWalk.
Local artists are showing their work at various locations in downtown Moab on Saturday, June 8, between 5 and 8 p.m.
If you happen to miss this ArtWalk, there won’t be another one until September. If you are able to attend, you can pick up a postcard and have it punched at all 10 venue locations to enter for a chance to win a prize from ArtWalk.
Southwestern artist Julia Buckwalter’s paintings will be featured at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, 111 E. 100 North, one of the 10 venue locations that will be open for ArtWalk.
Like Moab’s residents and visitors, Buckwalter said she is drawn to desert landscapes, which provide her with the inspiration of color and form in her creations. Her work can be described as having intense color and bold brush strokes with a fluid movement on the canvas.
She grew up in Utah and New Mexico, and said she feels inspired by her traveling and time in the desert watching clouds and storms roll across the region. This exhibition is her way of “Celebrating Rock and Sky,” a theme in her artwork which is dedicated to her passion for the region.
To see the artworks of other Moab artists, continue your tour to Moab Made, 82 N. Main St., to view a collection of artworks on display by over 100 Moab artists.
Rebecca McAllister, owner of Moab Made, said there’s no theme in the shop for this month’s ArtWalk, since all the artworks will be on display. You can purchase a painting, jewelry, ceramics, woodworks and home goods all made in Moab by Moab residents.
Just a few steps away, Gallery Moab has a large display of fine art from more than 40 Moab artists. An artist reception is being held at the gallery, starting at 5 p.m., for guest artist Ginny Wise and featured artist Sandi Snead.
Wise, based in Cedaredge, Colorado, works with pastels “en plein air,” a French phrase that means “in open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors. She has been using vibrant colors in her pastel artwork since 1989.
“The beauty of natural landscapes is quickly changing and disappearing,” Wise said. “I strive to capture the light, the atmosphere and the essence of a place and time.”
Snead paints with oils and pastels to show the images of life in Moab and the region. Her works include realism with a bit of surrealism as she uses vibrant colors that make her work pop with color.
Once you have strolled through Moab Made and Gallery Moab, head over to the Datura Deli at Moonflower Community Cooperative, 39 E. 100 North, to see the paintings on display by Greg MacDonald. Light snacks will be served in the deli for ArtWalk visitors, and you may purchase food from the deli to eat as you look at the artworks.
If you’re hungry for photography, stop by the Tom Till Gallery, 61 N. Main St., an ArtWalk venue well known for its colorful photographs, and tour the shop’s wall-to-wall selection of landscape prints from around the Moab area.
