Red Devil basketball, swim teams compete before Thanksgiving break

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, the Grand County High School boys basketball team competed at Union, the girls basketball team competed at Monticello, and the swimming team competed with six other teams at Carbon.

In boys basketball, the Red Devils routed the Union Cougars, winning 71-56 despite being outscored in the fourth quarter. Senior Kaine Allred scored 34 points and had seven steals and six assists, while senior Eli Hazlett had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The girls basketball team lost 54-26 to Monticello, a game in which underclassmen accounted for all 26 points and the team collectively went 0-for-17 from the free-throw line. The inexperienced Lady Red Devils have just one senior and two juniors on their roster. Freshmen Josalyn Murphy, Megan Zunich and Maggie Groene scored 12, 8 and 4 points, respectively, while sophomore Tenney Cook had two points.

Also young and inexperienced, the Red Devil swim team continued to improve its times at Carbon, a meet that also included Emery, Delta, Gunnison, North Sevier and South Sevier. In the meet, the GCHS boys placed second and the girls placed third.

The girls basketball team is scheduled for a four-game home stand, which was set to begin versus Pinnacle Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
