Two members of Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) were honored at a holiday banquet at Red Cliffs Lodge on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017.
Kory Meidell was named GCSAR Member of the Year and Monica Holyoak was recognized as Rookie of the Year.
Meidell has been an active member since he joined as a trainee in 2013 and became a full member in May 2014. He had the third highest number of responses among GCSAR members this year, according to GCSAR Commander Jim Webster.
“Kory has well-developed skills in many areas, including river and high angle rock rescue, and likes to prepare and present training to others,” Webster said. “He is also a member of Castle Valley Emergency Medical Responders.”
Monica Holyoak joined as a trainee in the spring of 2016 and has been a full member since April 2017.
“Monica is enthusiastic and a quick learner, and applies herself to all aspects of search and rescue,” Webster said. “She has been one of the top responders since she joined.”
Almost every year, Grand County Search and Rescue is the busiest SAR team in Utah, according to Webster. In the last three years, GCSAR responded to 425 calls for assistance, with 132 calls in 2017.
