Moab resident Lloyd Swenson passed away December 26, 2017, in Salt Lake City.
Lloyd was born on October 24, 1950, to Archie and Norma Swenson in Murray, Utah. He was the third of five children. He grew up in Moab and Bountiful, and he graduated from Viewmont High School in 1968. He served over two years for the United States Army in Vietnam; he received the Army Commendation Medal four times. After his military service, he returned to Moab, where he married his wife of 45 years, Kathy Bell, on September 29, 1972. Lloyd and Kathy had three children: Melissa, Kendall and Kimberly.
He worked in the local mines during the uranium boom for 14 years, after which he worked as a mechanic for Tag-a-Long Tours for the next 12 years. He finished his career with the City of Moab. He started in the street department and then moved to the water department. Lloyd retired as the Sewer and Water Superintendent in 2015. Lloyd also proudly served as a volunteer firefighter in the Moab Valley Fire Department for 32 years. In 1997, he was named Firefighter of the Year.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Swenson of Moab; three children: Melissa (Duane) Lee of South Jordan, Kendall (Margy) Swenson of Moab, and Kimberly (Bob) Gipple of Taylorsville; three grandchildren, Gavin Lee, Ryanna Lee, and Kendall Gipple; three sisters, Linda (Randy) Rowley of Fillmore, Donna (David) Schultz of St. George, and Bonnie (Bo) Bohannon of Moab; and one brother, Bruce (Terri) Swenson of Elko, Nevada. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
More than anything, Lloyd loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors: riding his motorcycle, hiking, fishing, hunting and camping. He loved taking pictures during his outdoor adventures and sharing them with family and friends. Lloyd also took great pleasure tending his garden and yard. During his retirement he spent as much time as possible at his cabin and exploring the La Sal Mountains in his side-by-side.
Services were held on December 30, 2017, with interment at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Lloyd’s name.
