KZMU’s original musical radio drama, performed at Star Hall in February, will be aired on Sunday, March 18, at 5 p.m.
“Beautiful Radiant Things” is the story of the anarchist Emma Goldman’s birthday in prison nearly 100 years ago. With more than 30 pieces of music, the play not only portrays a slice of early 20th century life in the Missouri State Penitentiary for Women, but tells much of the story of Emma Goldman’s life.
Written and directed by KZMU manager Marty Durlin, “Beautiful Radiant Things” features a local cast, orchestra and crew. Laurel Hagen stars as Emma Goldman and Kya Marienfeld portrays the socialist Kate O’Hare; the two clash over politics and personality while trying to sway their sister inmates: Haley Austin as prostitute Hester Campbell; Jenna Whetzel as druggie Lottie Funk; Michele Johnson as thief Lulu Bibbs; Ellen Hutto as counterfeiter Minnie Eddy; and Melissa Graciosa as Aggie the Lifer.
The orchestra is led by Jessica Retka on piano, with Bobby Hollahan on trombone and tuba; Jeff Gutierrez on saxophone; Miriam Graham on concertina and whistle; Josie Kovash on bass; and Doni Kiffmeyer on snare drum.
Sound effects on Foley Box are performed by Marlene Mody and Doni Kiffmeyer, and Joanne Savoie served as assistant director and stage manager. The sound is by Dave Montgomery.
“Beautiful Radiant Things” is the third original musical radio play KZMU has produced in the past two years. Tapping into the musical, theatrical and technical talent in Moab, the plays serve as a celebration of community, an annual fundraising event and programming for the station.
Now 26 years old, KZMU is Moab’s noncommercial community radio station. Programmed by volunteers and operated by a part-time staff, KZMU offers music, news and public affairs. The station will launch a daily news report in April. You can listen to KZMU at 90.1 FM and 106.7 FM, and online at kzmu.org.
