It is with deep sadness that the family of Duncan Mackie announces his passing on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at HopeWest in Grand Junction, Colorado. Duncan passed away with his wife Caroline by his side, dying of heart failure and ending a long journey with cancer. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and, one day, his ashes will be buried in a special place with those of his beloved Caroline.
Duncan was born on June 13, 1952, in Enfield, England, to Hugh and Charmion (King) Mackie. Duncan’s dad was a Scot, and wanted to make sure his sons never forgot their heritage even if they were born in England – hence their names: Duncan, Eoin and Angus – they didn’t forget!
Duncan and Caroline met at work and married on September 30, 1972, in Enfield. In 1978, after Duncan progressed into computer system support for a major computer manufacturer supporting banks and large corporations, they took the opportunity to emigrate to California to work for computer companies in Silicon Valley. Then, in 1992, after discovering Moab whilst on sabbaticals touring the Western states, Duncan and Caroline decided to make this little gem their home. Here, Duncan worked as a software developer supporting customers both worldwide and locally, but always loved exploring the vast desert surrounding Moab – camping and hiking among the red rocks or simply taking their dogs for walks. Although a brilliant tech, Duncan found escape and peace in photography – with a keen eye and amazing talent for finding stunning unique shots, he enjoyed capturing the beauty of the wild world he loved.
Duncan had a great love of fast cars and steam engines, and had been a fan of drag racing dating back to the early days at Santa Pod in England. He also enjoyed music beginning with his small band practicing in his parents’ cellar, evolving into a lifelong passion.
Anyone who knew Duncan was touched by his warmth, depth, caring, generosity, sarcastic humor and (sometimes) infuriating wit. He will always be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Caroline; his brothers Eoin and Angus; sister-in-law Janis; nephew Oban, who felt that Duncan was one of the most loving uncles anyone could wish for; brother-in-law John; sister-in-law Lynn; and also his cousins, many nieces, nephews and good friends around the world, not forgetting his faithful dog Ziggy, who is taking care of Caroline.
We all love and miss Duncan, but, he is not lost; he will always be a part of us.
