Jazz legend Gene Perla joins Steward Brothers for ArtWalk

Moab’s ArtWalk welcomes special guest Gene Perla, a legendary jazz bassist, who is performing on Saturday, June 9, with regional musicians David and Timothy Steward.

ArtWalk begins at 5 p.m. with the trio playing and singing swing versions of selections from the Great American Songbook, as well as Latin-flavored bossa nova numbers, near Moab Coffee Roasters at the corner of Main Street and 100 North.

Perla is in the midst of a tour with Paris-based vocalist Viktorija Gecyte. They’ve been playing the East and West coasts and are soon headed for more dates in Europe.

On Thursday, June 7, Perla and the Steward Brothers are also performing at the Moab Backyard Theater at 8 p.m. The Moab Backyard Theater is located west of Main Street behind Zax restaurant at 56 W. 100 South. Admission is free.

Perla has an extensive history in the jazz world from playing with Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan, to Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. He is perhaps best known for his collaboration with drumming titan Elvin Jones.

David Steward is no stranger to Moab audiences. You can catch him around town singing and playing his hot guitar in a number of musical settings such as his own jazz group and bluegrass outfit, Quicksand Soup. Timothy Steward is a Dolores, Colorado, singer-songwriter who is a renowned multi-instrumentalist, equally adept at stringed instruments such as the fiddle, guitar and Irish pipes.

During Moab’s ArtWalk, galleries and other businesses will keep their doors open until 8 p.m. to showcase local artists and their work. ArtWalk attendees can pick up a postcard at one of the participating business locations and have it punched at each location for a chance to win a prize.
