If you’re looking for creative and wholesome activities for your youngsters this summer, look at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center (MARC), which is offering three week-long “Arty Farty” art camps in July.
Six-year-old Cedar Oldham is looking forward to attending all three weeks because he had such a good time participating in the summer art camp last year, said his mother, Jess Oldham.
“I like Arty Farty because I like art and you get to do art,” he said.
His parents appreciate being able to enroll their son in an activity he clearly enjoys.
“He requested to do it again,” Oldham said. “Both my husband and I work, so we’re happy to have options for child care that is engaging and fun.”
Children, ages 5 to 11, will be exploring pottery, photography and painting. Each week, the MARC is offering a different art medium, with other activities also planned throughout the day. Art camps are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The first session, which began July 9, is titled “Earth – Explore dirt, mud and pottery.”
There is still time to sign up for the next two sessions taking place on July 16-20 and July 23-27. The first is “Wind, Air, and Fire – Capture the elements through a lens,” and the later session is “Water – Play with water, paint, and things that flow.”
Children will spend part of the day outdoors with activities such as hula hooping, skipping rope and chalk art.
“That’s what I did as a kid in the summer,” MARC Director Meg Stewart said, referring to the favorite kids’ pastimes of skipping rope and twirling of hula hoops. “We recently paved (the MARC) side yard. It’s nicely shaded now and a nice play to hang out.”
Candice Gary and Bitsy Tatera will teach the arts and crafts classes, along with two teen assistants, Stewart said.
Cost for the week long camp is $105, or $300 for all three weeks.
“It is a good deal,” Stewart said. “We aim to keep the camp affordable.”
Scholarships are also available thanks to a grant from the State of Utah and “generous” donations from community members, she said.
The MARC offers arts, education, culture and events for both children and adults in the community. To learn more about galleries, festivals and other art events, or to register for the kids’ summer art camp, visit: www.moabarts.org/registration/arty-farty .
