The Grand County High School volleyball team won a pair of critical region matches on the road, improving to 6-5 in Region 15 play by beating Richfield 3-1 on Friday, Oct. 12, and beating South Sevier 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Lady Red Devils dropped the first game 25-22 on Friday, before topping the Lady Wildcats in the next three 25-17, 25-23 and 25-18. On Saturday, Lady Red Devils and Lady Rams played neck-and-neck the entire afternoon with three games going overtime (the first four games are first-to-25, and the fifth game is first-to-15, but teams must win by two points), and neither team winning a game by more than three points. Grand won the first game 26-24, then the Rams knotted the score with a 25-22 win in the second game. Grand forged ahead 25-22 in game 3, but the Rams won 26-24 in game 4 to set up a decisive fifth game, which Grand won 16-14.
The Lady Red Devils’ regular season finale was supposed to take place in Blanding on Tuesday, Oct. 16, versus San Juan. The UHSAA Utah State 3A Volleyball Championship tournament takes place at Utah Valley University in Orem on Oct. 24 and 25.
The GCHS girls soccer team’s season came to an end as it played its match in the first round of the state 3A soccer tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 10, losing at Summit Academy 2-0.
