Murphy Lane in Spanish Valley has multiple alligator cracks in the asphalt that are being repaired with lines of tar. The road needs major repairs.
The Transportation Special Service District spent almost $500,000 of our mineral lease money allocated for road repairs building all weather roads in the Big Flat area near Canyonlands National Park for a multibillion dollar oil company in 2014 and 2015. The Spring Canyon Road, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, ends at the company’s last well and turns into the well site. The Transportation District also gave $10,000 of road money to Uintah County for its study of tourism on the Book Cliffs Road.
The Transportation Special Service District is no longer necessary in Grand County now that the county is collecting sales tax for road construction. The county council controls where sales tax money will be used for road construction. The county council cannot control where the mineral lease money given to the Transportation District is used.
The Transportation District should not receive any money in the next fiscal year. The money can be used for health care of the elderly in our community.
