Grand County High School’s students of the month for February 2016 are Selina Mitchell and Jefferson Wakefield.
Mitchell is the daughter of Rachel Mitchell and Thomas Cooper. She said her favorite classes at GCHS are history and ceramics.
“With history, I love how fun it is to see what happens in other countries and learn about the world’s past,” she said. “With ceramics, I think it’s beautiful how you can almost go into a trance and mold the clay into anything with enough practice.”
Mitchell said her most challenging classes are math and animal science.
Although she hasn’t been officially employed, Mitchell says she enjoys helping babysit children for friends.
“I have always loved playing with younger children,” she said, adding that she would like to work at a day-care center someday.
Wakefield is the son of Gery and Gail Wakefield.
Wakefield said he enjoys his English class and loves his teacher, Ms. Donna Metzler. He also enjoys Mr. Hank Postma’s computer classes.
Wakefield said his most challenging classes are math and physics.
“I hate doing math, and just don’t understand it,” he said.
Wakefield has been involved in GCHS school plays, working up in the tech booth and helping with the microphones. He also has participated in band and has carried the banner for the marching band. He was voted Junior Prom king last year.
Wakefield also enjoys watching sports on TV, with his favorite team being the Brigham Young University Cougars. He is well-known for his captivating smile and cheerful heart.
Outside of school, Wakefield volunteers at the local LDS Family History Center.
After graduation, Wakefield says he plans to take college classes at USU-Moab. His dream job would be to work as a teaching assistant at the high school level.
The local Elks Lodge sponsors Grand County High School’s Student of the Month program under the direction of Frank Vaccaro. Jeff Richards is the high school coordinator. The Elks started the program to recognize students who are outstanding in the areas of character, leadership, service, citizenship and scholastic performance. The Rotary Club and Grand County School District Board of Education also recognize the students.
