Cosmo’s Corner: Purr-fect Resolutions for the New Year

Hello friends and welcome to 2026! New Year’s resolutions are a time-honored way to start the year. I rarely make them myself. I have no need; it’s hard to improve on being a Library Cat at Grand County Public Library.

But I thought it would be fun to imagine what I’d resolve if I were a human. Here are my ideas:

New Year’s Resolutions for Humans by Cosmo the Library Cat

Start an exercise routine

It doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated as long as it includes a little cardio. You’ve probably noticed that I nap through most of the day. However, what you don’t see is the workout I get patrolling the library at night when the people have gone home. Along with chasing toys and leaping onto high shelves on occasion, this keeps me fit as a (bass) fiddle, and feeling frisky. I recommend committing to a little more exercise this year, even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block every day. Having dedicated time set aside for self-care is good for your mental health too. I think you deserve it!

Get my finances in order

It seems like money is extremely useful to humans, though I never touch the stuff myself. The Grand County Public Library has information on everything from basic budgeting to investing. Find these resources in the catalog or ask staff to direct you.

Start a gratitude journal

I’ve heard that practicing gratitude boosts happiness. If I could hold a pen, I’d set aside 5 minutes each week to jot down what I’m grateful for. How very lucky I am to have my friends, my health and my stunning good looks, for example! If you have none of these, stop and think about how cool it is to have opposable thumbs. A lot of animals envy you!

Learn a new hobby

Why not use those opposable thumbs on a new hobby? I’ve always wanted to learn to knit, but I can’t hold the needles, and if I’m honest, I can’t even look at a ball of yarn without swatting it across the room. But you don’t have these problems (hopefully)! So what’s stopping you? If knitting isn’t your thing, use the Grand County Public Library website to find CreativeBug and get access to thousands of how-to videos for all types of arts and crafts.

I hope you enjoyed this thought exercise as much as I did. I think it gave me some new insight into both the challenges faced by my human friends and their unique strengths. Please stop by the library to update me on your progress with your resolutions! Happy New Year!
