The Moab Valley Multicultural Center has doubled its food pantry offerings in response to growing community need after a federal government shut down put food assistance to over 600 local families at risk.
The center is now providing supplementary food boxes weekly instead of twice per month, along with a City Market food card for families who show proof of a SNAP EBT card, according to Rhiana Medina, the center’s executive director.
“MVMC’s increased food availability would not be possible without the generosity of the community who have come by with food and monetary donations,” Medina said. “We have already seen increased visitation to our food pantry; we hope that assuring them of the weekly availability of a consistent, healthy food supply eases some anxiety.”
Medina added that the Moab Valley Multicultural Center is the only food pantry in Moab open Monday through Friday during regular business hours, making it accessible for working families and individuals. “We guarantee the same robust food box each time,” she said.
What’s in each food box
Each standard box includes eggs, bread or tortillas, natural peanut butter, pasta and pasta sauce, rice, canned vegetables, dried beans, and tuna or chicken. Synergy vitamins—including prenatal vitamins, multivitamins, and vitamin C—are available once per month, and fresh produce may be added when available.
With proof of a SNAP EBT card, recipients also receive a City Market food card to supplement their pantry box. The card’s value may vary depending on funding and donations.
How to access the program
The food pantry is located at 156 North 100 West, Moab, and is open whenever the office is open, Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Individuals must show proof of SNAP eligibility to receive the additional food card, but the regular pantry remains open to all community members in need.
Recipients can also opt into an email list to receive alerts about additional food resources and updates on the program’s schedule.
Medina said the expanded weekly service is intended to continue through the winter, depending on community support and donations.
