The Grand County Commission split 4–3 on a tense vote to appoint County Engineer Sean Yates as interim head of Planning and Zoning, replacing Cristin Hofhine. The move drew objections from Commissioner Mary McGann, who called it a sign of a “toxic work environment,” while Chair Bill Winfield defended the decision, noting staffing struggles predated his leadership.

Wildlife was also in the spotlight. Black bears were spotted at Dewey Bridge and Grandstaff Campground, with state officials reminding residents to take care if they encounter one. Meanwhile, invasive opossums have been captured in Grand County, raising concerns about threats to ground-nesting birds.

Sports brought cause for celebration: Grand County High School’s Red Devil mountain bike team took first place in Cedar City despite missing a key rider, with strong community support on display.

Other highlights:
• Governor Cox will attend the Sept. 12 opening of Confluence Cottages, a new 24-unit workforce housing project at Arroyo Crossing.
• The BLM has reopened Indian Creek climbing areas after raptor nesting season.
• Grand County Hospice will host a free “Death Over Dinner” conversation Sept. 22 at the Youth Garden Project.
• The Grand County High School girls soccer team dominated Enterprise 8–0, while boys’ golf placed third at two regional meets.

And in Cosmo’s Corner, the library cat invites families to celebrate “Fat Bear Month” with bear-themed crafts and live cams at the Grand County Public Library.
