Hello and meow everyone, it’s Cosmo the Library Cat with big news for all you bargain hunters out there. Grand County Public Library will be having a giant, one-day book sale at Grand County Public Library from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 17! The craziest part is that if you bring your own bag (any size!) you can fill it with books, DVDs and music CDs for only $1!
A lot of hard work goes into these book sales. Few things are more fascinating to a lazy cat than the behind-the-scenes magic created by the Friends of the Library. Beavers and honeybees, famously industrious creatures, have nothing on this crew of dedicated library volunteers.
They are the true unsung heroes of this establishment. The library receives hundreds of donations every week—boxes and boxes of books, usually with that delightful smell of old paper and dust. Twice a month, these valiant volunteers gather in the meeting room to sort them. This, my friends, is where the real magic happens.
They carefully consider each book, pondering whether it might bring joy to a patron here in Grand County. You’ve probably heard of Marie Kondo, right? Well, these humans take her advice seriously—books are held, pondered and appraised like rare treasures, each one deserving thoughtful consideration. As a cat, I can tell you that I, too, know the power of a good book (or at least the value of snoozing on them).
Some of the books are new and some are classics. Others come from families who have outgrown them. They all get a shot at finding a new temporary home in the library’s always-happening Lobby Book Sale, awaiting a forever family to adopt them, and some go to these occasional, big one-day book sales. There’s a delightful variety to be found, from children’s picture books to adult fiction, nonfiction and even vintage books, plus movies and music as well.
The Friends of the Library have been supporting this library with their hard work for twenty years. Twenty years of perfecting their craft, each sale more efficient and organized than the last. They’ve become a well-oiled machine—a team that knows exactly how to keep the process running smoothly, ensuring that the library has the resources it needs to continue providing valuable programs to the community. Every purchase made in the book sale, every Cosmo T-shirt or sticker sold, goes toward supporting those programs, and keeping your library running strong. These wonderful humans are making the library a better place for all who walk through its doors.
So, I hope you’ll come by on April 17 for this special, one-day, one-dollar-per-bag book sale. And the next time you see a volunteer stocking the shelves with books, consider stopping to say thank you. They might not always expect it, but trust me—they’re the true heroes of the library. As a cat who appreciates dedication and hard work (from a comfortable distance), I say: They’ve earned it!
