Cosmo’s Corner: Paws to Read!

Meow, everyone. It’s Cosmo the library cat. I’m excited to let you know that PBS Utah is holding its annual reading challenge for kids during November. Kids from preschool to 6th grade can participate by reading every day to receive prizes and stickers. It also makes them eligible for a super-special grand prize: an Adventure Passport to museums, zoos and other awesome activities!

To receive this amazing grand prize, complete the challenge by reading (or being read to) for 20 minutes every day in November. That adds up to a total of 600 minutes!

Kids participating in the reading marathon can register using the Beanstack app. Just have your parent search “Beanstack” in your phone’s app store. You can also do it online by visiting www.tinyurl.com/gcplreads.

This year, the theme of the challenge is “Paws and Read,” and, in honor of that, Grand County Public Library has stickers of an incredibly handsome library cat (that’s me!) and LeeRoy, the library’s beloved storytime dog, available for participants who register for the challenge, while supplies last.

My buddy LeeRoy is no longer with us, but in his many years as the library’s storytime dog, he has played an important role in starting our littlest patrons on the path to being good readers. I think LeeRoy would be delighted to know he is being immortalized as an incentive to read more.

Now for the big prize! All kids who complete the challenge will be invited to my 11th birthday party in January!

Usually, I like to spend my birthday quietly, with a few nice naps and some extra tuna. However, I’m looking forward to everyone having a lot of fun in my honor. I hear that there will be treats, games and a service project for the Humane Society of Moab Valley. So log in those reading minutes on Beanstack!

Reading minutes must be submitted on the PBS website (pbsutah.org/reading) beginning December 1, to receive an Adventure Pass.

Meow for now, and keep turning those pages!
