Dwight Johnston speaks out: The taxes are too high

In 2019, my 94-year-old mother paid $1,260 in property taxes on her 1100 square foot house.  This year her property taxes are $2,760. Her taxes went up $1,500 in 5 years or a 20% per year increase to the county and 11 other taxing entities and now, this year, the city. If this continues and her property taxes more than double again in five years, her taxes will be over $5,000. This is not sustainable for working-class people!

We need to elect people who know how to manage taxpayers’ money and put in common sense regulations that will allow private contractors to build low-income apartments and houses which will increase taxes to the city and slow down this insidious increase. It would also alleviate the low-income housing crises.

Our officials need to spend our money wisely, not on ‘sustainability’ and planters that need to be weeded and maintained every year. We need our roads and bridges fixed and cleaned and better flood control. We need coordination between the county and the city.

If your taxes have gone up and your services have gone down, vote on November 5 for candidates who understand how to manage our taxes responsibly.

Kind regards,

Dwight Johnston
